Professionally done tattoo’s are pierced into the skin called the ‘dermis’. The bodies defence mechanism then reacts to the pigments, but is unable to cast out them out because of the ‘dermis’ stability. The ink is then permanently held under the skin surface. There are a number of other reasons why a tattoo is so difficult to remove.

This can be due to the density of the colours. Some colours are broken down more effectively than others; such as blacks and browns. Others such as reds, oranges and whites are harder to remove and may take an increased number of sessions.

Professional tattoos can not be removed in one session. The number of sessions required depends on the size, location, skin type, colours and density of the tattoo. This will be assessed at the initial consultation and an estimate given as to the number of treatments required.

Some amateur tattoos (those not placed using a tattoo gun) can be removed in 1 or 2 sessions.

Laser Tattoo removal can be a painful process! We can however, advise on the use of topical anaesthetics to limit the discomfort.
